Best Hotels for White Mountains Hiking & Biking
With a home base at The Mountain Club on Loon, you’ve got endless opportunities to hit the trails of New Hampshire’s glorious White Mountains: whether pedaling two wheels or hoofing it in hiking boots.
One look at the mountainscape grandeur all around you at our slopeside resort is likely to whet your appetite for exploration, adventure, and fresh-air workouts.
Hiking in the White Mountains
Miles of spectacular New England hiking trails await you in The Mountain Club on Loon’s scenic backyard, not least in the 750,852-acre White Mountain National Forest.
In nearby Franconia Notch State Park, hike the unreal slot canyon of Flume Gorge, goggle at waterfalls (not least 80-foot Cloudland Falls on the Falling Waters Tail, and trek to Lonesome Lake on the Basin-Cascade Trail.
The nationally celebrated Kancamagus Highway accesses a slew of great White Mountain trailheads. Drink up the views from the ledges of 2,520-foot Mount Hedgehog, which range from Mount Passaconaway out to New England’s crowning peak, Mount Washington, in the Presidential Range. Use the Lincoln Woods Trailhead to access the quiet backcountry of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, or head for Sabbaday Falls or the Greeley Ponds.
Or “bag” the summits of Mount Flume or Mount Liberty in the Franconia Range just a stone’s throw from The Mountain Club, or tough it up the flanks of 4,862-foot Mount Moosilauke to the west or 4,700-foot Mount Carrigain to the east for some of the finest viewsheds in New Hampshire.
Biking in the White Mountains
Pedal-powered opportunities in the Whites are just as abundant. Loon Mountain Resort itself is an outstanding destination for biking, whether taking to the cross-country circuits or zipping your way along the downhill trails. You can also bike between the resort and such regional destinations as Lincoln itself, Franconia Notch State Park, and Franconia Falls. The paved path along the Pemigewasset River offers lovely riding right by The Mountain Club on Loon.
Close to 20 miles round-trip, the Franconia Notch Bike Path (or Recreation Path) is one of the area’s top biking routes, hitting up such landmarks along the way as Flume Gorge and Echo Lake and offering looks at the Cannon Mountain profile that was once home to the famous “Old Man of the Mountain.”
The Kancamagus Highway itself is an extremely popular (and challenging) road-biking adventure, as is the Tour de Notches threading through the mountain passes of Franconia, Crawford, and Bear notches.
