Join us at The Mountain Club on Loon for “leaf-peeping” of the finest order—but don’t delay, as the peak season for fall colors is getting underway right now!

Fall Colors in the White Mountains

There’s still a fair amount scientists don’t know about the biological reasons behind fall colors, but the basic story is clear: As day length shortens, deciduous trees begin phasing out production of the primary photosynthesizing pigment in their leaves, chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color of spring and summer foliage. As this happens, the colors of other leaf pigments—including those such as carotenoids that have been present throughout the growing season, only masked by chlorophyll, as well as anthocyanins specially produced in autumn—are expressed ahead of the leaves dropping for winter. Thus we get the delightfully vibrant fall tones of red, yellow, orange, and purple.

The northeastern U.S. has the inherent natural ingredients to produce above-and-beyond fall color, including a temperate climate that commonly promotes sunny days and crisp nights in the autumn as well as a great variety of hardwood trees and shrubs, from sugar maples to beeches. And here in the White Mountains, we get to enjoy an especially elongated fall-color show because of our broad range of elevation: from valley floors to the high shoulders of New England’s loftiest mountains.

Our fall colors tend to peak in October, so now’s most certainly the time to book your New Hampshire getaway at The Mountain Club on Loon for this legendary seasonal show brewed up by Mother Nature.
